Insights from Summer Camp – Comics Workshop

Location of Summer Camp – Sesimbra Natura Park in Portugal provided inspiring and creativity-boosting conditions for art expression of participants from Portugal, Slovenia, Czechia and Poland.  Comics workshop started with a presentation serving as a ground discussion and sorting out the basics of comics composition, the use of colour in narration and storytelling through art.

Workshop smoothly proceeded into sessions of creating and consulting stories that were to be transformed into comics art. This was the most challenging and as well crucial part of comics creation process as the basics of the comics is the story and characters. Participants chose topics related to Sustainable Development Goals and topics of workshops carried out by partners of the project so as: climate change, inequalities, and migrations.

Final stage of comics workshop was creating the artistic side of comics after the stories were made and drafts of comic structures were ready.

Creative artistic process of creating comics took over participants and they were using every possible moment in the span of three days of summer camp to finish up their artworks. Some participants even spend the long evening hours after most of the campsite was asleep to immerse in creative process using the warmth of Portuguese summer and the proximity of nature as inspiration boosters.

All comics created during summer camp are accessible to watch on our website and they also will get separate displays in every partner’s countries through exhibitions and vernissages with the involvement of participants from respective countries. Participant will also display all comics in their towns/schools in form of dissemination events sharing knowledge of SDG and creative process.

The comics workshop was facilitated by Foundation Twiga.
